Despite a generally agreeable southern climate, North Carolina experiences its share of extreme weather. Hurricanes and tropical storms skirt the coast every year, bringing strong winds and heavy precipitation -- and once a decade, on average, a hurricane will land a direct hit. These storms have the potential to damage buildings and infrastructure far from the coast, as in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo caused over $1 billion in damages in North Carolina (much of it in Charlotte, 200 miles inland).
In addition to coastal storms, North Carolina enjoys about 50 days of thunderstorm activity per year. Many of these storms produce hail, which can range from the size of a pea to the size of a softball! "Severe hail" is defined as larger than .75 inches diameter, about as big around as a penny; hailstones this size or larger cause widespread damage and are responsible for millions of dollars of damage every year in North Carolina.
